Friday Photo Finish

I’m the type of person who can’t remember someone’s name even if I’ve met that person a few times. People’s names just flutter in one ear and out the other. However the names of obscure old black and white movies? Yep, they’re in there hanging around just waiting to be the question to an answer on Jeopardy… a show I never watch. The words to songs from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s? Yep there. The names of flowers I’ve never seen in person, and maybe read about in a book or saw a drawing of somewhere a long time ago… apparently stuck in there as well as I learned a couple of weekends ago.

Pete and I were taking a walk around downtown. At some point, we passed these beautiful pink flowering trees in front of an apartment building. Pete asked what they were, and somehow from somewhere in the depths of my brain, I knew they were dogwood trees.

I don’t know how I knew them. I don’t recall ever seeing a dogwood tree before in person, and frankly didn’t think they existed in California… because again, I know nothing about them… except that I apparently can recognize them on the street and name them without hesitation.

Now if only Science could figure out how I can apply those memory cells to more functional uses like remembering the names of people I meet at work or in my everyday life… or in the very least where the heck I left my car keys.
