Makers Faire Find: Xylocopa

The minute I stopped at Xylocopa’s booth, I knew I had to write about them. Not only is their work amazing, but Michele and is just the sweetest person. Xylocopa is run by Andrew and Michele, a husband and wife design team, who live in Tucson and are multi-talented to the nth degree. In addition to being artists, Michele is an accomplished scientist and musician while Andrew holds a degree in Linguistics and spent time in Japan studying traditional architecture, language, and cooking.

Here are some examples of their work.

Clockwise from the top: Plywood Box Fiddle, The Complete Ukulele Guide to the Mustaches of the World, and the Five-String Box Fiddle (it has an inlaid rooster on the back).

Their award winning Young Mad Scientist’s First Alphabet Blocks. I saw these at the show, and the level of detail on them is incredible. Not to mention how witty they are: P for Peasants (with Pitchforks), F for Freeze ray, or U for Underground Lair.

This Bicycle Pendant is cut from natural hardwood and has real moving wheels.
BikeParkingsign.xylocopa.com
They created this Bike Parking sign for the BICAS annual fundraiser. Wouldn’t this make a great little addition to your garage or wherever you store your bike?

They also do some amazing works with paper as well such as these Paper Butterflies set of 12.

They also made these papel picados for a festival in Tucson.

Do check out their website to see more of their work and purchase a little something as well. Wouldn't those blocks make a great and unique gift for a child?
